  exhaust “耗尽”、“用光”、“用完”正式用词,指耗尽人力、物力、资源等,使(资产、资源等枯竭,竭尽。

  1) If we continue to use silver on films for cameras, the world’s silver resources will soon be exhausted. (如果照相机的底片继续用银的,世界上银资源很快就会枯竭。)

  2) We’ll have to stop production if the materials in stock are exhausted. (如果生产材料库存用尽,我们将不得不停产。)

  use up “用尽”,“耗尽”,口语用语,可与exhaust替换,使用范围更广。

  1) We will soon use up our fuel. If the new supply fails to arrive in time, we’ll have to stop production. (我们会很快耗尽我们的燃料。如果新的供应不能及时到达,我们不得不停产。)

  2) When the bacteria use up most of oxygen in the water, fish, shrimp, crabs and other organisms will be killed. (当细菌耗尽水里所有的氧气,鱼、虾、蟹和其他生物就会死亡。)

  run out (of) “用尽”,“用完”,口语用语。run out 是不及物动词用法,不用被动语态。run out of 相当于use up 。

  1) The food and drink ran out early, but otherwise the party was a great success. (食物和饮料早早用尽, 除这点之外, 聚会是非常成功的。)

  2) I am sorry that we have run out of gasoline. Could you lend us some? (对不起,我们用光了汽油。你能借给我们一些吗?)

  deplete

  drain “排水”、“引流”;“耗尽”,基本意思是慢慢抽水、排水(或其他液体),使流干、排光。可引申出“使枯竭”、“使耗尽”的意思。

  1) The heavy rain soon flooded the courtyard and they had to drain it out with a pump. (大雨很快淹没了院子,他们用泵把水抽掉。)

  2) Some economists worry that the massive American deficits would drain the supply of the global savings. (一些经济学家担心, 美国巨大的赤字会使耗尽全球进入储备。)

  3) You should take good care of yourself. Working day and night will drain your strength and health. (你应该好好照顾你自己。没日没夜的工作将会耗尽你的精力和健康。)

  deplete “耗尽”、“使枯竭”,多用于指逐渐耗尽资金、资源、贮存物、精力等。

  1) Being chronically angry, frustrated, or apprehensive can deplete your physical resources. (慢性持续生气、挫折或者忧虑能够消耗你的体力资源。)

  2) The drought has depleted their supply of water in the region. (干旱已经耗尽该地区的水供应。)
