　　pollute “污染”，多指有害物质使空气、水等污染，直接影响人体健康，名词是pollution。

　　1) The air has been polluted by the fumes from facoties and motor vehicles.

　　（空气已被工厂和车辆排放废气所污染。）

　　2) The sea is often polluted by oil which escapes from damaged or defective oil tankers.

　　(海洋经常被损坏的或有缺陷的油轮泄漏的油所污染。)

　　3) Scientists say that if pollution is not rapidly eliminated, the world will be a dangerous place for its inhabitants in decades’time.

　　contaminate “污染”，指被不干净或有害物质污染，被污染物可指任何东西，名词是contamination。
