考研英语词汇辨析(32)burn、flare 、flame、blaze的区别

  这组词都可表示“燃烧”的意思。

  burn 普通用词,指泛各种方式引起的燃烧。

  1) He threw a log on the fire, and it burnt up with a crackle.

  (他把一根木头扔进火里,火发出劈啪声烧得很旺。)

  2) The man rushed into the burning house to save two girls out of the big fire.

  (那位男人冲进着火的房子,从大火中救出两个女孩。)

  flare 指火突然燃烧起来,或指烧得很旺盛,常与up连用。可用于表示情感,如激动、兴奋、愤怒等。

  1) The California forest fires, which were regarded yesterday as almost under control, flared up again during the night.

  (加州的森林大火昨天被认为几乎已经得到控制,但晚上又烧了起来了。)

  2) The campfire flared up in the sudden wind, and soon died down.

  (突然一陈风把营火烧得旺起来,但很快营火就息了。)

  3) I don’t like to see your passion flare up so easily and go so easily.

  (我不愿意看到你激情来得快去得快。)

  4)The chairman flared up at the reporter’s remarks and tore the newspaper to pieces.

  (主席对记者的讲话勃然大怒,把报纸撕得粉碎。)

  flame 指带火焰的燃烧,作名词意为“火焰”“火光”。

  1) From the distance we could see the plant flaming with a big fire.

  (从远处我们看到工厂在大火中熊熊燃烧。)

  2) See the device setting on fire, they quickly put up the flame with a dry power extinuisher.

  (看到装置着火,他们很快用干粉灭火器将火焰扑灭。)

  blaze 指熊熊燃烧,迅速(或光亮)地燃烧,也可用作名词。

  1) When the firemen arrived the whole building were blazing.

  (消防队到达时,整幢大楼正在熊熊燃烧。)

  2) Fortunately, No one was inside the 152-year-old building when the blaze broke out.

  (幸运的是, 这座有着152年的历史建筑物发生火灾时没有人在里面。)
