考研英语词汇辨析（140） portion、 proportion； section、 segment、 sector的区别

　　这两个词注意不要搞错，portion “部分”，指总体中的一部分。proportion “比例”，指各部分成的比例。

　　1) Textbooks are a major portion of the book publishing industry.

　　（教科书在图书出版业中占了很大一部分。）

　　2）The great portion of his life was spent in London.

　　（他的一生中大部分的时间都是在伦敦度过的。）

　　3) At the same time, the proportion of young married who hope to have children has declined, and those with children tend to have fewer.

　　这三个词也容易混淆。section 指切割而成的部分，即成界限分明、相对独立的部分。segment 指某一段、某一节或某一块形成的部分。sector 可指扇形的情部分，也可表示“部门”，如industrial sector（工业部门）、high-tech sector（高科技部门）、private sector（私营部门）

　　fraction “一小部分”指人或物中极小的数量。fragment“碎片”、“残片”，指某一整体物残留下来的碎片。

　　2) Only a small fraction of students had the chance to win scholarship.

　　（只有极少一部分学生有机会赢得奖学金。）
