  On February 14th, Valentine's Day is celebrated in America, in Europe. It is a day when friends and romantic partners give each other cards and presents to express their love and appreciation. In 1847, the first Valentine's cards were made and sold in America. Today, the most popular Valentine's gifts to give are flowers, candy, chocolate, and jewelry.

   In many American elementary schools, students are required to give every classmate a Valentine card or candy. That means we celebrate Valentine's Day since we were kids. Valentine's Day is popularly known as V-Day, the day is significant culturally and commercially in many regions around the world, but is not a public holiday in any country. It's a festival of romantic love and many people give cards, letters, flowers or presents to their spouse or partner. They may also arrange a romantic meal in a restaurant or night in a hotel.

【Who was St. Valentine?】

History books tell us that there were a number of Valentines throughout history who were Christian martyrs and who were said to have performed miracles after their death to achieve sainthood.

However, during the reign of Roman Emperor Claudius II, there was a young priest named Valentine who defied the emperor's wish than young men remain single, so they would fight in his army. These man married young lovers in secret. For this reason he was sentenced and put to death. While in custody awaiting his death he allegedly fell in love with the jailer's daughter and wrote her love letters signed "from your Valentine."

Many people celebrate their love for their partner by sending cards or letters, giving gifts or flowers and arranging meals in restaurants or romantic nights in hotels. Valentine's cards are often decorated with images of hearts, red roses or Cupid. Common Valentine's Day gifts are flowers chocolates, candy, lingerie and champagne or sparkling wine. People who would like to have a romantic relationship with somebody may use the occasion to make this known, often anonymously.

Actually, lovers enjoy seven days, which include Rose Day, Propose Day, Chocolate Day, Teddy Day, Promise Day, Hug Day and Kiss Day followed by the big day. The week starts on February 7 with Rose Day when people in love give their plus ones roses as a symbol of their affection. Promise Day, Chocolate Day, Teddy Day, Kiss Day are other days in this love-filled week where you'll get plenty of opportunities to convey your love. Valentine's Week finally ends on February 14, with Valentine's Day. So, today is the last day of Valentine's Week.
