这组词都可表示“哭”的意思。

cry   最普通用词,可用作动词或名词。泛指因悲伤、恐惧、绝望,甚至高兴而哭。通常都哭

     出声来。

      1)The child started to cry when he couldn‘t find his mother.

              孩子因找不到他妈妈哭了起来。

      2)Poor Alice began to cry again, for she felt very lonely and low-spirited.

             可怜的小爱丽丝的眼泪又出来了,她感到非常孤独和懊丧。

      3)On the day of mother's funeral, my father cried real tears for the first time.

            在母亲葬礼那天,父亲有生以来第一次流了泪。

     4)No person deserves your tears, and who deserves them won't make you cry.

            没有人值得你流泪,值得你流泪的人是不会让你哭的。

weep      意思 cry  极为接近,有时可交替使用,但weep较为正式,强调小声地哭或无声

    地流泪。这个词形容哭的时,更多地侧重于哭的泪水而不是哭的声音。weep 偶尔也可用作名词。

    1)She could not restrained himself from weeping when she heard of the miserable story.

          听到这个可怜的故事,她禁不住无法掉流泪。

    2)Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.

           欢笑,整个世界伴你欢笑;哭泣,只有你独自向隅而泣。

     3)She wept bitter tears over her lost youth.

           她为自己逝去的青春痛苦地流泪。

     4)The Granny wept again but this time for joy.

     5)The weeping family hugged and comforted each other

           哭泣着的一家人相互拥抱并彼此安慰。

sob     伴随“哼 哼”声音的哭泣,指哭得很伤心,表示抽噎、啜泣,侧重于强调哭的声音。也

     可表示“呜咽着说”、“哭诉”。可用作动词或名词

      1)When I asked her what happened, she only sobbed, hiding her face in her hand.

            我问她发生了什么事,她只是用手捂着脸抽泣。

      2)Finally my sister broke down, sobbing into her handkerchief.

            我姐姐终于再也控制不住自己的情绪,捂着手绢呜咽起来。

     3)We can hear the child sobbing in the other room.

           我们听到那间屋子里的有个小孩在抽抽搭搭地哭泣。

     4)She sobbed out the story of her son's unfortunate experience.

           她哭着诉说自己儿子不幸的遭遇。

     5)She shut herself in her bedroom , sobbing her heart out.

     6)“Everything's my fault,” she sobbed.

           她呜咽着说:“一切都是我的错。”

     7)When he embraced me with his arms open wide, I felt my throat choke with sob.

wail   意为嚎啕恸哭、痛哭,指连续大声痛哭。可用作动词或名词。

    1)The little girl wailed every time her mother was away without her.

           每当妈妈外出不带她时,这小女孩都要哭叫。

     2)The child started to wail when the nurse come over with a syringe.

          当护士拿着针筒走过来时,孩子便嚎啕大哭起来。

      3)I saw an old lady wailling with fist beating her chest in the street corner.

           我看见一个老太太在街拐角处捶胸痛哭。

      4)After a broken love affair, you have a lot to wail about, but there is no reason to despair

           over it.

           恋爱失败后,你有理由许多感到痛心,但没有理由要痛不欲生。

     5)The breath went out of her in a wail, her body shook with violent sobbing.

            她恸哭失声,整个身子都随着剧烈的抽泣发起抖来.

     6)A thin wail out of the darkness chilled them grabbing for each other.

            黑暗中传来一阵微弱的呜咽声,吓得他们毛骨悚然,赶快互相抓住。

 

whimper   指断断续续低声哭泣,尤指因害怕、恐惧而抽泣、咽呜,或用颤抖的声音说话。

 

      1) When he couldn't find his mother in the department store,the little boy began to whimper

             in fright.

              当那个小男孩在百货商店里找不到妈妈时,吓得哭了起来。

      2)The condemned prisoner cowered and began to whimper for clemency.

             那个被判罪的囚犯抖缩着并开始抽泣请求宽恕。

      3)Jessica began whimper softly, and Susan took her from Dad 's arms.

            杰西卡突然哭了起来,苏珊把她从爸爸的怀里抱起来。

      4)The girl whimpered, “Don't hurt me.”

     5)Then he gave a silly little squeal followed by a whimper.
